A certificate of analysis is only useful if it describes the specific vial sitting in front of a buyer, and the way to check that is to match identifying details on the document against identifying details on the vial and the listing. Why a Mismatch Is Possible in the First Place

A COA is a report generated after a lab tests one production batch. A vial is a physical unit filled from that batch, or sometimes from a different batch entirely if a listing photo or template document gets reused across restocks. The two are only connected by a shared reference number. If a seller updates their product photos less often than they restock inventory, or reuses one generic COA across several product listings, the document a buyer receives may describe a batch that is not the one in the vial. This is not always deliberate. Small operations sometimes fall behind on updating paperwork when a new production run arrives, and the older document keeps circulating because nobody replaced it.

The single most direct way to confirm a match is the lot or batch number. A properly documented COA lists a lot number near the top of the report, usually beside the test date and the compound name. The test date on the COA should predate the shipment, since testing happens before a batch is packaged and sold, and it should not be so far in the past that it predates the seller’s own listing history for that product. A COA dated years before a listing first appeared, paired with a vial that is otherwise described as freshly produced, is a mismatch worth asking about directly.

Dates alone are not conclusive, since a supplier producing infrequent large batches can legitimately sell from the same tested lot for an extended stretch. The date check works best combined with the lot number check, not as a standalone signal.

Cross-Checking Packaging Details

Beyond the lot number, a few other details on a COA can be checked against what is physically on hand. The compound name and salt form or peptide sequence listed on the COA should match what is printed on the vial label. The stated net content, commonly expressed in milligrams, should correspond to the vial size a buyer actually purchased rather than a different size variant the same seller also lists. If a listing sells both a 5 mg and a 10 mg vial of the same compound and provides a single COA, it is worth checking which vial size the document’s net content figure actually describes, since a COA written for one size does not automatically apply to the other even if the compound and lot are otherwise the same.
